Amelia Paige

February 2013

Life is crazy!  With my other two kids, I was dying to have the doctor induce me early, and I had time in my schedule to do so, but this time around, I still wanted to have her early, but I had way too much to get done before she made her arrival.

In the spring of 2012, I had signed up and registered for the Washington ProCert teacher portfolio, to be completed June 2012.  It needs to be completed within 5-7 years of your initial WA certificate.  So I figured that I would just get it out of the way.  Well school got busy, like it always does, and I decided to pay $75 to extend the completion deadline to January 2013.  Which is all fine and good...................until I found out that I was pregnant at the end of the school year, due February 8.

I was also committed to being the choral rep for our local music teacher association, so I added 2 extra things in addition to my 2 kiddos, my high school choirs, and for the first time also teaching 3 middle school choirs.  I was scheduled to work at another regions solo/ensemble festival February 2, and then my students were to participate in our solo/ensemble February 9, which coincidentally Garry and I were hosting at our school.  Since my other two kiddos were both served eviction notices, and born 2-3 days after their due date, I just figured I would finish my portfolio, due Thursday, Jan 31, go to SF solo/ensemble, Feb 2, go to our solo/ensemble Feb 9, and then beg the doctor to induce me, Monday, Feb 11.

So as I said, I really, really wanted to have the baby early, but I was a little afraid to have her too early, because I knew I had way too much to do.

My ProCert portfolio was my number one priority because it cost $500 to register, and I didn't want to have to pay for it again, so instead of procrastinating until the very last minute, I worked diligently through the month of January, and had it mostly completed by Monday, January 28, and just had to put the finishing touches on it and got it submitted the night before it was due.....very, very late on Jan. 30.

We took Carson to his first Pinewood Derby on Thurs. Jan 31, and I kept telling people I had a good week and a half left, and the baby was in no hurry to get here..........  :)

Carson was excited because he got third place, and he wasn't even officially in scouts yet!

I went to school on Friday, Feb 1, and was feeling utter exhaustion!  My high school kids kept telling jokes, and trying to be funny, and I told them my sense of humor might come back one day, but right now, I didn't think they were funny!  I had gone to the doctor earlier in the week, and he didn't seem to think I was very close so to just keep going, and he would see me next week....Grrr!

Garry and I were supposed to be at Rogers High School at 7 am, Sat, 2/2.  I woke up about 4:30 an hour earlier than my alarm, feeling contractions about 15-20 min apart.  When I went to the bathroom, I felt like things were "on their way!"  So after talking briefly with the on call dr., I told Garry to call and tell them I didn't think we would make it to solo/ensemble but would be going to the hospital instead.  We got to the hospital and they had me fill out what seemed like a ton of paperwork, and then took me back to triage to check and see how things were progressing.  I had been dilated to a 2 at my appt. and when she checked me I was at a 3, so they hooked me up to the monitor to keep track of the contractions........ and they pretty much stopped, I was having some very minor ones, but not enough for them to admit me....dang it!  They told me to go walk the halls for 30-45 min then come back, and they would check me again.  At the next check I was at a 4, but still not feeling very many contractions, and the painful ones had all but vanished.  So she gave me a pill to help me "relax", and smiled at Garry and told him she would probably see him later that night.

We left the hospital and decided to run to Costco and Target to get a couple things since we figured we would probably have a baby before the weekend was over.  I was miserable, and getting more tired by the minute so we sped up our trip and went home.  Carson and Natalie were with Garry's parents, and I told him I wanted to see them for a little bit especially if we ended up going back later that night, so he let me rest for a couple hours, and then brought the kids home.  They woke me up, and we talked for a while, and my contractions came back with a vengeance! About 7-10 minutes apart, I told Garry we needed to go......like NOW!  We loaded the kiddos up and dropped them back off with Garry's parents.  As we were en route, my water broke amidst a massive coughing fit about 10 minutes before we got to the hospital....ugh!  My other two kids were induced, and they ended up breaking my water, and that was a totally different experience.  I'm thankful it wasn't the same!  But every time I would cough, I would have another gush.  We pulled up to the valet parking at Sacred Heart, and we missed it by just a few minutes because there was nobody there, so Garry went to get a wheel chair, we left the car at the entrance of the hospital, and he wheeled me up to the maternity wing.  We walked through the door at 8:01pm.

The nurses made me fill out the same paper work I had filled out earlier that day, and then told Garry to bring me back to triage to see how things looked.  Then one of the nurses saw that I was leaving a trail of amniotic fluid everywhere I went, and my pants were totally soaked, and told the other nurse to just wheel me back to a room they were admitting me......YAY!

Contractions at this point were 2-3 minutes, and I was getting very uncomfortable!  They had me change into a gown, and then asked if I wanted an epidural, I said YES! so they called the dude to come do it, and another nurse came to put in an IV................it did not go well.  Before the second nurse got there for the IV, they checked me and I was dilated to a 7, so they called the doctor, and told her to hurry.  The nurse tried and tried and tried to get the IV in, no luck, so she switched arms about the time the happy man got there, but he said he couldn't do the epidural until I had a working IV.  This is all happening about 8:20.  My contractions were becoming continuous, so they decided to check me again, and I was at a 10.  So they halted everything, the happy man slithered out the door, the nurse failing to insert the IV took a small break, and they set up the room to deliver, and my on call Dr. wasn't there yet.

They told me if I felt like pushing that I could go ahead.  I started pushing, and then they told me to stop, but while screaming my head off, I could not stop.  Garry kept telling me to calm down.......uh....sure?  So about 8:29ish, my Dr. finally comes in and the nurses and interns tell me I can continue pushing...I'm pretty sure I never stopped, it was like I had no control! And Miss Amelia made her appearance at 8:32 pm.  30 minutes from the time we walked through the door, with no IV, no pain meds, and almost no Dr.!

She came out chunky, and screaming!

9 pounds, 12 ounces, 22 inches, 14 inch head

All of my babies have been big and water-logged, but by the time we leave the hospital 2 days later, they lose all the water weight and are down around 8-8 1/2 pounds, and from there just progress like normal.
She ended up just being pretty peaceful about the whole ordeal after her initial arrival.

She enjoyed her warm bath once we were transferred into our new room.
Then I just let her sleep...........We were both exhausted!
Garry went and got the kids after church on Sunday, and they were so excited to see her!  Carson kept taking pictures on his DS, and Natalie just could not stop touching her.
She was absolutely so excited to have a little sister.
We stayed in the hospital until Monday, and then we got our new little princess ready to come home.
This time around the whole experience has been way more surreal!  She came a week early.....totally unexpected, but she has been such a delight!  Truly a gift from heaven.  I sure do love her, and she has been such a good fit into our little family puzzle.

Happy Anniversary!

This day.....

1 year ago - I left Garry home alone while I took the kids and went to my mom's for our annual summer time visit.  I told Garry we were expecting miss Amelia.

2 years ago - Garry got us tickets for Michael Buble............TOTALLY AWESOME!

3 years ago - We went to the Melting Pot, got a hotel room downtown, and got massage's, also totally awesome!

4 years ago - Days away from having princess numero uno, we went out to dinner in hopes of speeding up the process.

5 years ago - Dinner at the Olive Garden, first day of summer vacation!!!

6 years ago - I was doing summer school to renew my teaching certificate in s. Idaho, Garry sent me flowers to CSI, I was totally shocked, and very impressed!  :)

7 years ago - Went out to dinner in Sandpoint, was also Father's Day, and we had the sweetest babysitter who watched Carson for free!

8 years ago - I married my best friend on a beautiful hill top in Bonners Ferry at our good friends home, where we were able to celebrate with family and friends.  We had a tower of heart shape sugar cookies with pink frosting in lieu of cake, beautiful weather for the ceremony, and were both filled with anticipation for the future!

8 years sure does go by fast!  Garry said we're not cool anymore, but a house, a dog, and three babies later, I wouldn't trade being cool, life is pretty good, and it just keeps getting better :)

Spring Break Trip

We traveled to Idaho for Spring Break this year, and it was fun.  It had been a really long time, like 15-20 years since I had been to balanced rock, but while we had a lot of free time, I thought it would be fun to take Garry and the kiddos.  Just southwest of Twin Falls, Carson thought it was pretty sweet!

There is an air museum in Nampa that every time we drive by going to or from my mom's Garry has said for the last 8 years, "I would really like to stop there."  We usually are in a hurry when we're in Boise, and just drive on past, one time we even tried to stop, and whatever day of the week it was was the day they were closed.....Thwarted!  But Garry decided since we were just chillin' the whole week he would take Carson up one day, and they would check out the museum.  He said it was pretty cool, a lot of local history, and some cool planes on display.

We went with my brother and his wife to the temple, and got some cute pics of the kids in their Easter clothes.

We had fun going to an Easter Egg Hunt at CSI, dying eggs with the kids, and taking a few more pics.  I swiped Tara's IPad box, and drew an eye on a pad to give to Garry for Easter......he didn't think it was nearly as funny as I did :)

We had a great week, and it was fun that for the first time ever Easter fell over spring break, so we were able to spend it with Grandma Hope.

Carson's first motorcycle ride

Carson was dying to go on a ride with Garry....it scared me slightly!  After the motorcycle show, they went and found a youth size helmet for him, and they decided to go try it out.  He had a blast...I tried not to have a panic attack!

It was a fun day for the boys!

St. Patrick's Day

As a little kid, I never set a leprechaun trap.....in fact I don't ever really remember even knowing you were "supposed" to catch leprechaun's?!?  Last year Carson kind of constructed a trap, but I was still in the "what in the world are you doing?" mode....This year, I think they started talking about it earlier at school, because there was no way he was not going to make a trap this year....in fact he wanted to have it set for days before St. Patrick's Day, but thankfully I held him off.  Carson was sure that we had to have real gold to lure the leprechaun, so proceeded to raid my jewelry box for every bit of gold he could find, and then set a popcorn box trap guarded by lego soldiers.
Sadly we didn't end up catching that sneaky leprechaun, and luckily he didn't steal any of my gold, but those poor lego dudes had quite the night!

Re-evaluating

One of the things that I have always thought I was pretty good at was reading people, and then doing an okay job of de-escalating situations which emotions run high, at least in my job aspect of things.  I am generally not an over-thinker, but want to deal and work through mis-understandings and move on!

That being said, I work with approximately 35 high school girls on a daily basis.......emotions tend to run high.....all of the time.  You would think that growing up in a family of 6 girls, I would have had a lot of practice dealing with drama, but I think the difference was even when we were hot fire ticked off at each other, we weren't dis-respectful and all out rude.  I'm sure there were exceptions, but for the most part we knew where the boundaries were, and didn't often push the limit.  We would duke it out, and then get over and say I'm sorry.

This truly has been one of my best teaching years ever.  This is the first job I have had that I have an entire crop of kids that are all mine in my high school program, and I love it!  They sound amazing!  My top choir qualified to go to state the end of April, and because they have met and risen to the expectations of performing well, I have been trying to take them to the next level...........and that is where I suppose I have gotten in trouble for assuming.

Which is where the whole reading people thing comes in.  I have had a few kids talk with me this week about how awful choir has been, and it has totally blind-sided me................I really truly don't know how I can be in the same room, and have such an opposite perspective.

I'm kind of in a middle land.  Though choir really has been great, I still don't have the comfort of booming numbers.  It's growing, but it is still very much in the nurturing phase, where you must sometimes make sacrifices.  One of my weak spots I suppose is that at times I try so hard to see the good in kids that I let them push the limit too far before I intervene, and then I hurt their feelings when I have to reprimand them.  I really don't want to come across as a hard-ass, but I don't like feeling taken advantage of either.  Sometimes I wish there were more classes in college dealing with inter-personal skills.  You go into the job thinking you're going to have a bunch of kids who are super eager to please you, and who want to do their best in their performance.  And then reality hits, and you realize you have to be the motivation.  Because though kids may want to be there, they are sometimes a tough crowd, and don't really know what they want.

I think the most frustrating thing for me right now, is that a week ago, I really in my heart of hearts thought everything was peachy!  Back to the drawing board I suppose.  We never arrive, that I know, but we can have one heck of a memorable journey.

Wish me luck, back in the trenches tomorrow.

Reading time

We have this rule at our house where Carson has to read the same amount of minutes that he would like to play his DS.  It so far has worked out rather well.  But I find it funny when our little miss has to do what her brother does :)

Valentine's Day

Valentine's day was good this year, with the great help of Target's $1 aisle, I got the kids super cute baskets, and fun little things for like $15.  I got up early to make them heart cinnamon rolls, and for dinner, Garry was at a pep band game, so we made heart shaped tortilla pizzas for dinner....it was good :)

Carson's classroom party was thankfully at a time during the day where I could sneak away and go.  In one of the picture's you can see a little girl holding the valentines we made, and I'm so mad that I didn't take a picture of them, but we got a bunch of conversation hearts, and wrapped them in pink paper, and attached a playlist on the front with the toggle of an ipod, then we attached strings from the box to mini reeses cups wrapped in tin foil for the head phones, it was super cute!  Thank you pinterest!  Then we made for Carson's teacher paper cut out hands attached to a bottle of lotion that said..."you deserve a hand"  thanks once again to pinterest.  It was fun to watch him interact with his classmates, and I was glad I was able to go!

Carson turns 7

February 3, 2012

I LOVE this face!

This kid has so much personality that at times it is over whelming!

Because Fred's departure was so traumatic on Christmas Eve, he decided to make a re-appearance to give Carson a birthday card, he was SOOOOO excited!  I got lazy this year, and didn't wrap any presents, he just found them in a box in the morning, when we got home from school he kept asking me, when do I get to open my presents, and I told them he got all of them in the morning, and he kept saying oh, man, I really wanted to unwrap them....notes for the future!

At his school, they always do a beach party fund-raiser and it happened to fall on his birthday this year, so he was excited to do something a little extra special on his actual birthday.

For his birthday party, we decided to take it a little easy this year, and I told him only 4 friends.  It's hard sometimes with a winter birthday, if we decide to stay home, there is only so much space, but it worked out, and I think he enjoyed himself!

I got the birthday party idea from pinterest, and it was fun.  We had a concession stand, and each of the boys got tickets, and they could "buy" popcorn, soda, mini-candy bars, pizza, and their movie entrance.

When they arrived, we had them decorate their "cars" and get them all ready for the "drive-in."

After they played for a bit, we had pizza and cupcakes, and then it was time for the big show, CARS 2.  Sadly, the movie was kind of a flop, and since they had all seen it, they got bored, and just wanted to go play.  Thankfully it was pretty easy to entertain them with only 5.

He was so excited to get so many cool gifts, he especially loved his new lego sets!

On Sunday, we had some family over and celebrated some more with cake.  I thought Lightening turned out pretty well.

It was exciting, because this is the first year that he has been able to read all of his birthday cards by himself.
I also saw this on pinterest, and thought it was a pretty good survey, to get a somewhat well rounded idea of what he likes, some of them I could have guessed, and others completely surprised me.

We went to the doctor, and he finally gained weight.....7 lbs in one year, compared to last year when he hadn't even gained one pound, that was quite a lot!
So now his stats are:
49 inches, gaining 2 1/2 in, in the 70%
50 pounds, gaining 7 lbs, in the 50%

The other interesting thing that we learned at the dentist this week at his 6 mo. check up is that he is missing about 5 permanent teeth, poor kid!  Including his two front bottom teeth.  He has been dying to lose some teeth, and it has been a very slow process......well more like stagnate, but it was good to know that was the reason why his bottom ones aren't falling out.  So now we'll wait until he's approx. 9 to make some decisions about how to handle it, until then I love looking at his cute little smile with all his tiny teeth, once they're gone, he will be ecstatic, and I will cry!

I certainly love this little dude!

Snow Day!

We did get quite a bit of snow this year, but it seemed to come a bit later than usual, and stayed FOREVER!!!!  I never really "enjoy" snow, but I don't mind it in December and January, even trickling into February, but I always dread going into the spring and March with snow.

The kids on the other hand, couldn't get enough, they loved playing outside, and making a snowman, and then coming inside to warm up with hot cocoa.
